Verizon Business Engineers win union election
November 12, 2008

A small group of Verizon Business building engineers voted overwhelmingly on Wednesday, November 12 to form a union with the IBEW T-6 Council. The vote in favor of collective bargaining was five to one.

The building engineers will gain a voice on the job and the strength of belonging to a much larger group of Verizon workers, including hundreds of Verizon Business technicians who recently won union recognition and a union contract.

Separately, a second group of Verizon Business network engineers voted against forming a union.

Like so many other employers, Verizon Business management aggressively interfered in the workers' decision in both units.

Here’s how union members made the difference in President Elect Obama’s big win.

* Union voters supported President-elect Barack Obama 67 percent to 30 percent over Sen. John McCain. In the top-tier battleground states the difference was even more stark, with union members going for Obama 69 to 28—a 41-point margin.

* While McCain won among voters ages 65 and up, active and retired union members older than 65 went for Obama by a 46-point margin.

* While McCain won among veterans, union veterans went for Obama by a 25-point margin.

* 60 percent of union members and 56 percent of Working America members said the economy was a top issue.

* Union members got a lot of contact from their unions about the election, with more than 80 percent receiving union mail, more than 80 percent receiving union publications, 59 percent getting live phone calls and 32 percent getting worksite fliers.

* 75 percent of union members say Obama’s victory gives him a mandate to make major change. 81 percent support the Employee Free Choice Act.

* 21 percent of voters were in a union or union household.

With 52 percent and more than 62 million votes, Obama has more than surpassed Bush’s 2004 win. His seven-point win over McCain is a decisive victory for pro-working family policies.

Senator Obama has been a strong ally of organized labor and of working families during the entire span of his career in politics. He is a co-sponsor of the Employee Free Choice Act, possibly the most important piece of pro-worker legislation that has been created in the past decade. He has fought for universal health care, sensible trade deals, and ensuring that our seniors get the type of retirement that they deserve. Senator Obama has faced the difficult issues like the sagging economy and the housing crisis face-on, and has proactive approaches to resolving these issues and getting America back on track.

Senator Obama has continually proved than he is dedicated to improving the lives of America's working families, earning himself a 100% labor voting record in 2007, and a lifetime labor voting record of 98%. Compare this to his Republican opponent, Senator John McCain who in 2007 had a 0% labor voting record!

Verizon engineers seek fair treatment and collective bargaining rights in wake of announced layoffs

Forming a new union by uniting with Verizon workers in IBEW T-6 Council

A majority of Verizon's more than 250 outside plant engineers in New England have petitioned the National Labor Relations Board for a certification election to form a union with the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW).

Despite a 31 percent third quarter increase in earnings, on October 30, Verizon Communications told as many as 39 engineers that they would be laid off before the end of November.

Without collective bargaining rights or a union contract, the engineers had no voice in the decision. Many engineers are being laid off while outside contractors are working for Verizon doing similar work. The engineers work for Verizon in Massachusetts and Rhode Island designing installations for union technicians.

Union leaders are calling on Verizon to give the engineers the same consideration that union members would get if management needed to reduce staff.

A Message to all IBEW Members at Verizon from Myles Calvey

November '08 election is an opportunity to highlight our concerns, set the stage for important new gains

"No man is an island" -- and neither is our union.

For more than a year, union members mobilized for a good contract at Verizon. That mobilization helped get everyone educated about our major objectives. It got everyone talking about our core issues like job security, health care, pension benefits, and wages. Mobilization builds lasting membership unity -- and that's how we won a good contract.

It's tempting to lay back and be satisfied with the good wages, benefits, and job security that we all enjoy, but think for a minute about what is happening in the world. The economy is going down hill fast. People are losing their homes in record numbers. Unemployment is up and will likely get much worse. The debate is whether we are in a recession or depression.

Now we have to use our mobilization skills at a different level. These huge problems can best be addressed through political action. It's time to mobilize for the election on November 4!

Qwest Reaches Tentative Deal With CWA

Qwest Communications reached a tentative contract deal with the union representing the company’s 20,000 workers. Under the most recent contract proposal reached with the Communications Workers of America, the employees would receive an extra year of job security and an annual wage increase of 3 percent for each year of the four year contract. In exchange, workers will end up paying more for healthcare premiums, as the jump from $33 per month for the family plan to $75 per month. Employees won’t vote on the new proposal until October 31.
