Members Vote to Authorize Strike - GET READY
By an overwhelming vote… Telecom workers ready to strike for good jobs and reliable services at Verizon Telecom workers who work for Verizon Communications in Massachusetts and Rhode Island voted by 95.3 percent to authorize their union negotiating committee to call a strike if necessary when their contract with the company expires at midnight on August 2, 2008. The workers are united in seven IBEW local unions federated in the System Council T-6 that negotiates with Verizon management "Unless Verizon comes to its senses soon, more than 9,000 workers in New England will strike to defend the good jobs and reliable services our communities need," said Myles Calvey, Business Manager of IBEW Local 2222 and chair of the T-6 Council. It appears Verizon has adopted a new business model that no longer values the contribution of its hard working employees. Our members are sick of management's disrespect for their jobs and the needs of our customers. We won't stand for it." To back up the strike vote, thousands of members are expected to march and rally at 6:00 PM on Thursday, July 31 at Verizon’s New England headquarters at 185 Franklin Street in Boston. Union members will be joined by technicians from Verizon Business, a new subsidiary created after the company bought the remnants of MCI/WorldCom. For the last two years a majority of the roughly 525 techs in New England and New York have been trying to form a union -- but Verizon has refused to recognize their organizing rights. Many elected officials, labor leaders and activists from the community-labor coalition Jobs with Justice are expected to attend the rally as well. The New England strike vote is one part of a combined effort with all Verizon locals from the IBEW and the Communications Workers of America to prepare for the August 2 expiration date. The T-6 Council members are IBEW Local 2222 (Greater Boston), IBEW Local 2313 (operators), IBEW Local 2321 (Merrimack Valley and North Shore), IBEW Local 2322 (Southeastern Mass, Cape and Islands), IBEW Local 2323 (Rhode Island), IBEW Local 2324 (Western Mass), and IBEW Local 2325 (Central Mass). |
