The 1st Annual Jerry "Judgie" Leary Golf Tournament has been scheduled for Friday, October 15, 2010 at both George Wright & Franklin Park Golf Courses. Jerry passed away in December 2009 after a valiant battle against cancer, and the tournament is our way as friends of Jerry to give support to his family.
Leary was a telephone worker, lifelong Dorchester resident and well-known neighborhood guy. As a union activist and Vice President of IBEW Local 2222, he won the admiration of his co-workers during the legendary four month NYNEX strike and many subsequent battles with its successor companies Bell Atlantic and Verizon.
Not a golfer? We've got great news for you - a fun filled reception will be held at Florian Hall immediately following the tournament - reception only tickets are available.

The 12th Annual Walk to Cure Cancer sponsored by the Massachusetts AFL-CIO will be held on September 26, 2010 at the UMass Medical School campus in Worcester. This year’s Walk to Cure Cancer will hold a very special meaning for the Massachusetts Labor Movement as we have lost one of our brothers to cancer, former Vice President of IBEW Local 2222 and of the Massachusetts AFL-CIO, Jerry Leary. Jerry passed away on December 11, 2009, after a hard fought battle with cancer.
The Massachusetts AFL-CIO Walk to Cure Cancer has raised over $6 million for cancer research over the past ten years. The cancer center on the fourth floor of the Lazare Medical Research Building is named the Massachusetts AFL-CIO Cancer Research Center as a result of these efforts. While we are incredibly proud of this milestone, we must continue our efforts to find a cure. The devastating loss of Jerry serves as a reminder that cancer research remains ever so important. It is through funding and research at facilities such as the Massachusetts AFL-CIO Cancer Research Center that a cure can one day become a reality.
Gerald Leary was an irreplaceable part of our state's Labor Movement. He will be sorely missed and his lasting impact sets an example towards which all of us should strive. His loss should motivate us to all give our best effort to this year’s Massachusetts AFL-CIO Walk to Cure Cancer.
Everyone has had their lives affected by cancer, whether it is a family member, friend or co-worker that has suffered from this terrible disease. The entire Labor Movement was dealt a great loss through Jerry’s untimely death. In honor of Jerry, we ask that you join us on September 26th at noon at the UMass Medical School campus in Worcester, Massachusetts. This walk is an opportunity to fight back against a disease that impacted too many of our families, friends, and neighbors.

Telecom workers begin year-long campaign for good jobs and reliable services at Verizon
Boston – Hundreds of telephone workers united in the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW) and the Communications Workers of America (CWA) rallied for good jobs on Thursday, August 5 at Verizon's New England headquarters. The current labor agreement with Verizon expires on August 6, 2011.
Myles Calvey, Business Manager of IBEW Local 2222 and chair of the New England telephone workers' bargaining committee was the Master of Ceremonies. "A year before our contracts expire, we're sending a message to Verizon's top management that we'll fight for the preservation of good jobs, quality health care and secure pension benefits in negotiations next year," said Calvey.
"Some very profitable companies are using the recession as an excuse to demand givebacks and concessions from their employees," added Calvey. "We want to make it clear to management that union members aren't going to fall for that nonsense at Verizon."
Verizon's second quarter finances showed $9.8 billion in cash flow from operations, up nearly 30 percent from 2009. The $108 billion company had $5.5 billion in free cash flow, up nearly 77 percent from the second quarter in 2009.

3.75% General Wage Increase will be in August 12th Paychecks
During our 2008 contract bargaining, the Union negotiated annual raises for the duration of the three-year collective bargaining agreement of 3% in 2008, 3.5% in 2009, and 3.75% in 2010 with an opportunity for an additional Cost of Living Allowance (COLA).
Verizon notified the System Council T-6 that because the difference in the National Consumer Price Index for Urban Wage Earners and Clerical Workers (CPI-W) between May 2009 and May 2010 did not exceed the already negotiated General Wage Increase (GWI) of 3.75%, there would be no additional COLA, per our 2008 Memorandum of Commitment on the issue.
The GWI became effective August 1, 2010, and will be reflected in the August 12th paychecks for eligible members. See the Job Aid below for details on how Short Term Disability or other situations may impact your eligiblity.

BOSTON — Rep. Stephen Lynch’s campaign slogan reads “In times like these, we need a guy like him.” But at a campaign rally in South Boston Thursday, supporters were looking back to times like the 1990s and a guy like former president Bill Clinton.
Clinton spoke to several hundred Lynch supporters at the Iron Workers Local 7 in South Boston, drawing parallels between this year’s congressional elections and those of 1994, where Republicans took control of Congress two years after Clinton was elected president. He told the crowd they had to act to prevent a similar result in 2010, despite a slow economic recovery.
“We’ve got to learn to live with confidence in the face of change,” Clinton said. “To do that, we need people like Stephen Lynch.”
The former president was wildly cheered before his speech and mobbed afterward as he left the building, and Lynch’s queries as to whether the state was still “Clinton country” were greeted with roars of approval. Skip Smith, a Holbrooke resident who’s been an ironworker in the union for the past 15 years, said he was still a big Clinton fan.
“Wild Bill was the best president we ever had, I never worked so much as when he was president,” Smith said. “I think the election is harder than [Lynch] thought it would be so he’s bringing in the extra firepower.”

Tell Dunkin Donuts It's Time to Make the Contract
Teamsters Local 25 began negotiations with DCP, Dunkin Donuts largest northeast distributor, on October 21, 2009 after successfully organizing the group. The Committees have met 3 times per month since the start of negotiations and have yet to reach an agreement. As a result we are joining our brothers and sisters in the labor movement and BOYCOTTING DUNKIN DONUTS!
Just as we did with Shaw's, we will stand up to corporate greed and we will be successful. The only thing these people respond to is a hit in the bottom line, so that is where we'll hit them.
Support Teamsters Local 25 and BOYCOTT DUNKIN DONUTS!!
