Dear Sisters and Brothers:
The IBEW is calling on all Massachusetts union members to mobilize in support of allowing state legislative staff to exercise their right to organize and vote on joining a union.
For nearly 50 years, legislative employees have been excluded from union rights that executive and judicial branch staff already have. A bill now before the Legislature would fix that outdated law and let House and Senate staff vote on forming or joining a union. This is the result of a six-year organizing campaign led by the IBEW and Boston Local 2222.
Legislative aides do meaningful work but face low pay, high turnover, and workplace issues that a union could help address. Union rights would mean a real voice on the job, fair wages, enforceable protections, and workplace stability.
The bill sits before the Joint Committee on Labor and Workforce Development and still must clear the full House and Senate — or legislative leaders could choose to voluntarily recognize a staff union today.
The Government Affairs Department has created the Support Union Rights for Legislative Staff Toolkit below. It includes a website posting, a letter campaign to Massachusetts state legislators, and a social media post with graphics.
This toolkit is also available on the IBEW Government Affairs website at ibewgov.org/take-action.
Support Union Rights for Legislative Staff Toolkit

“As a proud Massachusetts union member, I support state House and Senate staff’s fundamental right to join a union. Massachusetts state legislators can pass a bill to fix an outdated law that blocks this right. Or they can voluntarily recognize a staff union today. Support union rights for legislative staff by writing to your legislators. bit.ly/4iGAXPH”
Thanks for your continued support!
