VZ Bargaining Update

Talks with VZ have ended without an agreement. The current contract expires in August 2026. Plan accordingly!

 

In late May, IBEW, CWA, and Verizon began negotiations to determine whether an agreement could be reached to extend the current collective bargaining agreements. By late June, significant differences remained between the parties’ proposals, and the Unions informed the Company of our intention to conclude negotiations. At the Company’s request, a high-level meeting was held, during which the Unions agreed to continue discussions, with the understanding that the Company was prepared to more fully address the Unions’ concerns. Despite these continued efforts, the Company has not adequately responded to the needs and priorities of our members. Instead, the Company has chosen to end the bargaining process. 

2222 & Congressman Lynch Support Striking Teamsters Local 25 Members

As Teamsters Local 25 members marked day 14 of their strike against Republic Waste, a few of IBEW Local 2222 leadership again joined them on the picket line in Roxbury. 

Also joining the line was Congressman Steve Lynch, who is not just a supporter of organized labor, as the former President of Ironworkers Local 7, he is one of us! Congressman Lynch sent a clear message that Republic Waste needs to take some of those billions and put them towards a fair contract for striking Teamsters.

LET’S SET THE RECORD STRAIGHT

Brothers and sisters,

As we hit day 14 of the strike against Republic Waste, we want to set the record straight on how negotiations have progressed.

1. Your committee has worked tirelessly fighting for what you deserve at the table and has been relaying your message to Republic loud and clear.

2. We have prepared a comparison sheet attached that shows where Republic Waste is paying you less (total package) than the Teamsters represented by Local 25 at Capitol and Star.

3. But we still have major issues other than just Wages and Health Insurance; unlike every company we deal with at the end of a strike, the company is refusing to consider an Amnesty Agreement which would protect all members from any disciplinary action from alleged violations on strike line.

4. Republic is also demanding inward and outward-facing cameras, which, based on the videos from the cameras, they can use to discipline you.

5. They are demanding a 5-year contract which will put you far behind the employees at Capitol and Star in years 4 and 5. We are insisting on 3 years, so that all agreements will expire on the same date 6/30/28.

6. Republic’s current offer will put you behind Capitol Waste by $5.81 per hour total package, in July 2026 you will be behind Capitol by $7.43 per hour total package, in July 2027 you will be behind Capitol by $7.93 per hour total package.

7. Why are Capitol and Star drivers worth $7.43 per hour more than you?? Republic Waste makes BILLIONS!!!!!!!!

8. Last, we want to personally thank every member for standing strong and willing to fight back against corporate greed. Our Unity is our secret weapon which, if we sustain it, will make our efforts successful.

Protect MA Labor Unions from Federal Attacks!

Donald Trump and his cronies are on a mission to destroy unions. Organizing rights for private sector union members might be at risk – but there’s a solution in Massachusetts.

The Protect LABOR Act (H.2086 & S.1327) would help to inoculate union members by ensuring state protections come into effect if federal protections are taken away. We need you to ask your legislators to cosponsor the Protect LABOR Act to ensure hundreds of thousands of workers do not lose their right to join a union.

Private sector labor rights are established under the federal National Labor Relations Act – if the NLRA falls or is otherwise dismantled, there will be almost no statutory protections for private sector union organizing in the Commonwealth.

The Protect LABOR Act ensures that Massachusetts workers have strong labor protections even if those rights are no longer protected federally, including:

  • Department of Labor Relations certification of pre-existing federally-recognized unions
  • a presumption of employee status to ensure all workers, regardless of industry, have guaranteed access to wage, hour, and benefits protections
  • electronic signatures for card signing when workers want to form a union
  • written majority authorization for all newly formed unions
  • in-person and electronic union elections to increase accessibility for all workers
  • a ban on captive audience meetings; and
  • protections from anti-union “right to work” policies

The right to organize and collectively bargain are under attack from a hostile federal government. We need YOU to join the fight for union rights!
