Today in Massachusetts hospitals, there is no law and no limit to guide the number of patients that can be assigned to a nurse at one time (aside from the ICU). Massachusetts hospitals are facing deteriorating patient care conditions, leading to more complications, readmissions, and errors, as well as longer hospital stays and real life-threatening risks.
The Patient Safety Act will dramatically improve patient safety in Massachusetts hospitals by setting a safe maximum limit on the number of patients assigned to a nurse at one time, while providing flexibility to adjust nurses’ patient assignments based on specific patient needs.

IBEW 2222’s own Paul Feeney, now State Senator Paul Feeney, is running for re-election for State Senate in Bristol & Norfolk County. Paul has worked tirelessly for our membership and has brought that same work ethic to the Statehouse, fighting tirelessly for working families.
Paul has a substantial record in politics, having served as a Foxboro Selectman, Senator James Timilty’s Chief of Staff, Labor Director for Congressman Stephen Lynch’s campaign, state director in both Massachusetts and Connecticut for Senator Bernie Saunders Presidential campaign, and currently serves in the Massachusetts Senate representing the Bristol & Norfolk district. He is the Chair of the Joint Committee on Public Service, Vice-Chair of the Joint Committee on Public Health and serves on the Joint Committee on Consumer Protection and Professional Licensure.
“Regular working-class people in our communities deserve a voice in the Massachusetts Senate. Since getting sworn in last year, I have worked hard in a bi-partisan way to improve our neighborhoods, address sky-rocketing healthcare costs, fight for our schools, protect our environment, provide for our veterans and seniors and give a voice to working people. I’ve been able to deliver for the people of our district because I never let politics get in the way of progress.”
– Senator Paul Feeney.
